Takeshi S. Komatani

Takeshi S. Komatani is one of Japan’s leading authorities at the intersection of pharmaceutical science and intellectual property law. A Litigation Certified Patent Attorney, he holds a PhD in Pharmaceutical Sciences from The University of Tokyo and a PhD in Law together with an LL.M with IP Certificate, from Keio University, bringing a uniquely integrated scientific and legal perspective to complex life sciences IP strategy.

Having begun his career as a pharmaceutical researcher at Roche in Basel, Switzerland, Takeshi brings a rare combination of hands-on drug discovery experience and deep legal expertise to his practice. At TAKASHIMA International Patent Office, he advises major domestic and international pharmaceutical and biotechnology clients on patent prosecution, patent thicket navigation, licensing strategy, and high-stakes patent litigation, including Supreme Court-level proceedings. His practice encompasses biologics, next-generation therapeutic platforms, and notably CRISPR-related technologies, where he has built and managed patent portfolios for universities and derived startups, led IP strategy development, and conducted licensing negotiations — work recognized with the Grand Prix at IP BASE AWARD 2023, presented by the Japan Patent Office.

A prominent voice in the international IP community, Takeshi serves as Vice Chairs of the TRIPS and IP-GRTKTCE SC, and has appeared as speaker and moderator at numerous AIPPI conferences worldwide on pharmaceutical and biotechnology IP topics. He has also published extensively in leading international IP publications, including IAM’s Global Life Sciences Guide.
Academically, he holds Visiting Professor appointments at Kobe University’s Graduate School of Science, Technology and Innovation and Doshisha University’s Graduate School of Medical/Life Sciences.
