Otto Licks is a partner at Licks Attorneys, a Brazilian law firm with more than 350 professionals and offices in Brazil and overseas, conducting global patent litigation for over 30 years. Otto is an expert in complex litigation, advocacy and policymaking, representing international clients and trade associations in the life sciences, ICT, SEP, and internet sectors. A trial and appellate practice specialist, he focuses on preliminary and permanent injunctions as well as patent monetization strategies.

Otto has been involved in standard-essential patent (SEP) litigation since the early days of telecommunications standards, starting with CCITT switching and signaling cases (R2/MFC, System 7 and ISDN). He was also responsible for the first nationwide patent adjudication campaign in Brazil for patent monetization, involving optical CD-R technology.

More recently, he has been engaged in pharma and SEP disputes involving IoT the automotive sector, reflecting the increasing convergence between telecommunications standards and the automotive industry as well as the enforcement of 3GPP’s 4G and 5G standards and audio and video codecs.

Before entering private practice, Otto was a treaty officer at the Organization for the American States (OAS) and served as a UN/PNUD consultant to the Brazilian Ministry of Foreign Affairs during the implementation of the WTO Agreements.
