Matthew Wilson is the Head of Intellectual Property Management & Commercialisation at Queen’s University Belfast, where he leads the strategic development, protection, and commercial exploitation of the university’s diverse IP portfolio. His remit spans patenting, licensing, spin out formation, and partnership development, ensuring that research outputs achieve commercial and societal impact.

With extensive experience in IP strategy, technology transfer, and innovation management, Matthew has driven initiatives to modernise and streamline Queen’s commercialisation ecosystem. He led the development and integration of three bespoke AI enabled tools that have delivered time savings for his team and expanded the university’s capacity to identify, assess, and manage emerging technologies at scale.

Following a stroke in 2023, Matthew accelerated his adoption of AI across his workflow and leadership practice. This shift has enabled him to redesign internal processes for greater clarity, efficiency, and resilience. He has become an advocate for the thoughtful, responsible use of AI within IP management — using automation to reduce administrative burdens, improve decision support, enhance data driven insights, and enable teams to focus on high value strategic activity. His experience has shaped a more human centred, technology empowered approach to innovation management that blends personal adaptability with institutional transformation.
Matthew works closely with industry partners, investors, and global IP advisory ecosystems, supporting complex commercial negotiations and guiding academic founders from early stage discovery to real world adoption.
