Joseph Yang is a partner at PatentEsque Law Group, LLP in Silicon Valley, with 30+ years’ experience in technology/patent transactions and strategic partnerships. In the technology transactions area, Joe has led hundreds of deals for leading IT, electronics, entertainment, consumer goods, healthcare, robotics, manufacturing, defense & energy clients, especially cross-industry (e.g., JVs, IoT, interoperability and convergence) deals. In the patent transactions area, Joe has a particular focus on the licensing of standards-essential patents and patent pools for wireless connectivity, audio/video and other applications.
Joe is also an expert witness for high-stakes IP disputes, particularly where there are disputes over licensing or other IP agreements.

Joe is also an educator. He teaches the “”Technology & Patent Licensing”” class at Stanford Law School, and chairs the nationwide “Advanced Licensing” and “Advanced Patent Licensing” and “Understanding the IP License” seminars at the Practising Law Institute.

Earlier, Joe was General Counsel of Cryptography Research, handling its IP development, licensing (10+ billion devices/year), litigation and eventual M&A. Before that, Joe co-founded and later led the “IP Strategy & Transactions” practice at Skadden, Arps (Palo Alto).

Joe is recognized by Chambers, SuperLawyers and various Marquis Who’s Who publications. Intellectual Asset Management (IAM) publications has repeatedly named Joe one of the “World’s Leading IP Strategists,” “World’s Leading Patent Professionals” and “IAM Global Leaders.”

Joe serves on the boards of the Licensing Executives Society (Silicon Valley chapter) and the Asian Pacific American Bar Association of Silicon Valley. He holds a J.D. (Stanford) and Ph.D. (Caltech, engineering).
